3 Reasons Why More Schools Need Facilities Management

Facilities management in schools plays a key role in several factors, all of which improve the school site. Unfortunately, there is a lack of strategic facilities management in UK schools, with over a quarter not having a proper approach. There are a number of important factors that make it clear why all schools should focus their FM strategy, let’s take a look at what those are.

Learning & Working Environment Quality

Almost 50% of teachers in the UK say that their working environment has a negative impact on their wellbeing, suggesting that school management often isn’t doing enough to support teachers in their day-to-day work.

Interestingly, studies have shown that well-maintained schools with little to no disruption can reduce the rates of teacher turnover by 25%, indicating that an improvement to facility management correlates with an improvement in teacher wellbeing.

What’s more is that these studies show an increase in the amount of teaching time for students, allowing them to progress faster.

Saving Costs

A recent report carried out by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors highlights the potential costs of neglecting proper facilities management strategies in schools, finding that organisations failing to take an effective approach lose a total of £1 billion in the UK.

By utilising more effective facilities management strategies, schools can reduce energy costs, improve space efficiency, reduce labour turnover costs, and prevent major costs from building up. On average, this could save each school over £120,000 according to the research that was done.

Improving Safety

A strong FM strategy also has the ability to improve the safety of a school. By creating proper plans, monitoring changes and maintaining the site, schools are less likely to run into sudden, significant problems and in turn can improve the safety of the entire site.

Safety directly impacts both the wellbeing of teachers and pupils, as well as the efficiency within the learning environment. Students who feel safe at school progress quicker and on average, achieve better grades than those who do not.
