Back To School – Why cleaning is so important

After the summer holidays, many schools will be looking to open back up to students. Whilst it is always important for children to be able to learn properly, the current situation with Covid-19 puts health and safety at paramount importance. As a result, schools must remain clean and safe at all times, in order to reduce the risks of spreading the virus.

Why is it so important for schools to be clean?

The virus spreads through respiratory droplets that are expelled when somebody talks, coughs or sneezes. These droplets can form on surfaces, leaving behind the virus, which can survive for up to three days on certain materials. It’s therefore crucial that these surfaces are cleaned and disinfected regularly to prevent the chance of somebody touching them and contracting the virus.

What’s more is that schools are unfortunately a prime location for surface to person spread. With younger children being less aware of things like coughs and sneezes, it is highly likely that droplets can end up on surfaces. Children are also more likely to interact with surfaces and not wash their hands before itching their faces or eating. With this in mind, it makes it even more important for schools to focus on effective cleaning strategies that will keep all surfaces pristine and free from potential Covid-19 droplets.

How can schools achieve this?

It is important that all surfaces, especially those that are used frequently, are cleaned at least daily, if not several times throughout. Areas and surfaces that are highly used within schools, such as desks, chairs, door handles, handrails, light switches and computers must be effectively cleaned as much as possible in order to remain safe for children to continue to interact with.

Surfaces that are not used as often or come into contact with hands less often should still be cleaned but do not require this as regularly. Areas such as floors, windows and walls near where people sit should be wiped and disinfected. Carpeted areas, rugs and curtains can be cleaned using soaps or appropriate sprays. Although these areas are less likely to transmit Covid-19, they should still be cleaned daily due to the busyness of school environments.
